The brief

Hadaway & Denton are an independent, family-run firm of funeral directors based in Ashford, Kent. Carl Denton, his partner Jo Denton, and Carl's father Barry Hadaway have built one of Kent's most respected funeral practices on care, transparency, and the kind of quiet excellence that earns testimonials like the one from The Good Funeral Guide: "the exact type of funeral director every town should have."

The brief was sensitive and serious. They came to us with a website that didn't reflect the calibre of the work they do — and, more importantly, didn't help families at the worst moment of their lives. They wanted something that felt warm, dignified, and quietly modern, with the practical depth to guide a bereaved family through every option without overwhelming them.

How we approached it

We started by listening. Carl and Jo walked us through the full arc of what a family experiences from the moment they call — the questions, the decisions, the worries about cost, the things people are too afraid to ask. Every design and content decision flows from that conversation.

The result is a website built around service pathways — eight distinct routes a family can take, from a traditional personalised funeral to an attended pure cremation to a horse-drawn cortege. Each pathway has its own dedicated page, its own pricing, and its own tone. Families never feel pushed; they're given space to find what fits.

Underneath that sits a local SEO architecture covering Ashford, Canterbury, Folkestone, New Romney, Maidstone and the rest of Kent — each town with its own landing page, so a family searching "funeral director Canterbury" lands on a page that speaks to them, not a generic catch-all.

Inside the build

Six things designed around grieving families

Every section earns its keep — connecting depth of service to a clear, gentle next step for someone in the hardest moment of their life.

Eight Service Pathways

From a personalised traditional funeral to attended pure cremation, eco funerals, horse-drawn cortege, modern services, prepaid plans and direct cremation — each path gets its own page, pricing and tone.

Multi-Town Local SEO

Dedicated landing pages for Canterbury, Folkestone, New Romney, Maidstone and surrounding Kent towns — each tuned for local search intent without ever feeling like a copy-paste exercise.

24/7 Multi-Channel Contact

Phone, in-person visit, home visit, live chat or email — four ways to reach Carl and Jo, available any hour of any day. No call queues, no contact-form-only walls.

Cinematic Video Hero

A quiet, slow-paced video introduction to the team and the premises — colour-graded for warmth, optimised for fast load, and subtitled for accessibility.

"What Do I Do Now?" Hub

A first-step guide for families at the very beginning of the journey, alongside bereavement support, a glossary of terms, and a list of useful contacts. Calm, clear, never sales-y.

Transparent Pricing

Open, downloadable price lists, an additional options sheet, full business terms and a quote calculator — pricing transparency that's still rare in the funeral sector.

The eight service pathways

Each path has its own dedicated page, pricing, and tone — families choose at their own pace, never pushed.

— The Good Funeral Guide

The outcome

Hadaway & Denton launched with a website that quietly does its job — surfacing the right service pathway for the right family, at the right moment, in a tone that respects what they're going through. The town-page architecture means a family in Canterbury, Folkestone or New Romney lands on a page that speaks to them directly rather than a generic homepage.

The transparent pricing — full PDF price lists, additional options sheets, terms of business, and a working quote calculator — sets Carl and Jo apart from the corporate chains, and the website now carries that openness front and centre. Multi-channel contact (phone, visit, home visit, live chat, email, all 24 hours) means a family can reach out in whatever way feels right at the time.

Recognition has followed. Jo Denton was nominated Funeral Arranger of the Year at the AGFD Good Funeral Awards 2026, and the practice continues to be celebrated by The Good Funeral Guide and listed by SAIF.
